Prevent training dropouts
This has been the aim of the VerA initiative of the Senior Expert Service (SES) for more than 10 years. The nationwide mentoring program is an offer for anyone who encounters difficulties when taking their first steps towards a career. And there are many of them, as 25% of all training contracts in Germany have been terminated prematurely for years. Only half of those affected find a new training occupation or company.

Success thanks to the tandem model
VerA brings trainees who want support together with retired volunteers – always according to the 1:1 principle. It couldn’t be more individual, and this is also the initiative’s recipe for success: VerA mentoring leads to success in over 75% of cases! More than 20,000 young people have benefited from VerA since it began.

For the skilled workers of tomorrow
VerA is aimed at trainees in dual or school-based apprenticeships, as well as young people who are taking advantage of vocational preparation courses and programs such as “Vocational Orientation for Refugees (BOF)”. Special emphasis is placed on promoting the next generation of skilled workers in rural areas and in the care and healthcare professions. VerA mentoring initially lasts one year, but can be extended if necessary. Applications can be made using the application form on the website vera.ses-bonn.de.

Training mentors
VerA training mentors are experts from SES. They have all completed a two-day preparatory seminar and regularly attend meetings for further training and to exchange experiences. SES supports their commitment with a monthly allowance.

Costs and funding
VerA mentoring is free of charge for trainees, training companies and vocational schools. SES’s partners in VerA are the Berufsverband der Freien Berufe (BFB), the German Chamber of Industry and Commerce (DIHK) and the Zentralverband des Deutschen Handwerks (ZDH). VerA is funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) as part of the initiative “Abschluss und Anschluss – Bildungsketten bis zum Ausbildungsabschluss” (Education Chains Initiative).

About the SES
SES is the largest German voluntary organization for specialists and managers who are retired or taking a career break (Weltdienst 30+). SES has been supporting the transfer of know-how in development cooperation since 1983. In Germany, it is primarily committed to supporting young people in schools and training. SES has access to more than 12,000 experts throughout Germany. 5,000 of them are available to provide training support.
